Membrane progestin receptors (mPR alpha, beta, gamma) are a new family receptors that bind progesterone. Unlike the classical nuclear progesterone receptor, mPR are membrane proteins that show the 7 transmembrane structure characteristic of GPCRs. When bound to progestin, this receptor blocks the activity of adenylyl cyclase, the enzyme that catalyzes production of the intracellular second-messenger adenosine cyclic 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP). Three distinct forms of the receptor are present in animal cells and show tissue-specific expression patterns.
