TDGF1, also called Cripto-1, is an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-related protein required during mesoderm development. Null mutations in mice are embryonic lethal due to defects in precardiac mesoderm, no cardiomyocyte differentiation and poor neural tube and head-fold morphogenesis. In adult, TDGF1 mutations lead to aberrant morphology of the mammary gland with consequences during lactation. TDGF1 is highly expressed in breast (80%), colon (80%), ovarian, uterine, gastric, pancreatic and bladder tumors and may be a useful marker for the corresponding malignancies.
