TBCC encodes the tubulin-specific chaperone c. It is one of 5 tubulin-specific cofactors that assist the multi-subunit cytosolic chaperonin in correctly folding a newly-synthesized beta-tubulin polypeptide into the correct native configuration. Chaperone c interacts directly with beta-tubulin during the cycling process, and thus is believed to either prevent illicit interactions with exposed hydrophobic surfaces on beta-tubulin subunits, or by lifting the target protein over one or more specific kinetic barriers to proper folding.
