SLC4a5 (Solute carrier family 4, sodium bicarbonate cotransporter, member 5), also known as NBC4 (Sodium bicarbonate cotransporter 4), participates in the regulation of the cellular pH. It mediates electrogenic, chloride-independent, stilbene-inhibitable sodium bicarbonate transport. There are at least 3 (NBC4a, NBC4b, NBC4c) splice variants of this protein, which have distinct tissue-specific expression patterns. Interestingly, the corresponding genetic sequence located at 2p13 (Alstrom syndrome (ALMS1) locus) encodes not only the SLC4a5/NBC4, but also a functionally unrelated protein, DCTN1.
