PPEF-2, a RdgC type serine/threonine phosphatase, is homologous to the Drosophila retinal degeneration C gene (rdgc) which is required to prevent light-induced retinal degeneration. However, elimination of PPEF function does not result in retinal degeneration in vertebrates. PPEF/RdgC subfamily members are characterized by C-terminal EF-hands (i. e., two or more EF-hand calcium-binding motifs). In addition to phototransduction, PPEF-2 may be involved in the regulation of calcium sensing of ionic currents, energy production, or synaptic transmission. At least two isofoms, PPEF-2(L) and PPEF-2(S), have been identified.
