Matrix protein 2 of Influenza virus is a single-spanning transmembrane protein. It is expressed on the infected cell surface and incorporated into virions where it is a minor component. The protein spans the viral membrane with an extracellular amino-terminus and a cytoplasmic carboxy-terminus. The transmembrane domain of the M2 protein forms the channel pore. The M2 protein, which forms a homotetramer, has H+ ion channel which was found to be regulated by pH and may have a pivotal role in the biology of Influenza virus infection.
