HMGN1 / HMG14

high mobility group nucleosome binding domain 1

HMGN1 binds to the inner side of the nucleosomal DNA thus altering the interaction between the DNA and the histone octamer. HMGN1 has been shown to enhance transcription on chromatin templates but not on DNA templates suggesting that the association of HMGN1 with nucleosomes is part of the cellular process involved in the generation of transcriptionally active chromatin. During mitosis HMGN1 is phosphorylated in its chromatin binding domain.

Gene Name: high mobility group nucleosome binding domain 1
Synonyms: HMGN1, HMG14
Target Sequences: NM_004965 NP_004956.5 P05114
