D-aspartate oxidase is a flavoprotein that catalyzes the oxidative deamination of dicarboxylic D-amino acids to give the corresponding alpha-keto acids and ammonia. DDO is inactive with D-amino acids that are oxidized by D-amino acid oxidase, which catalyzes the same reaction with neutral and basic D-amino acids as substrates. Two transcripts are produced by alternative splicing from the DDO gene. One transcript includes the exon n+1, while the other does not.
