B3GAT1

beta-1,3-glucuronyltransferase 1 (glucuronosyltransferase P)

Involved in the biosynthesis of L2/HNK-1 carbohydrate epitope on glycoproteins. Can also play a role in glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis. Substrates include asialo-orosomucoid (ASOR), asialo-fetuin, and asialo-neural cell adhesion molecule. Requires sphingomyelin for activity: stearoyl-sphingomyelin was the most effective, followed by palmitoyl-sphingomyelin and lignoceroyl-sphingomyelin. Activity was demonstrated only for sphingomyelin with a saturated fatty acid and not for that with an unsaturated fatty acid, regardless of the length of the acyl group. The enzymatic activity of B3GAT1 enzymatic activity produces the CD57 epitope on other cell surface proteins. Please note that while CD57 is commonly used as a synonym for the B3GAT1 protein, CD57 refers to the carbohydrate epitope product, while B3GAT1 is the glucuronyltransferase enzyme that creates it.

Gene Name: beta-1,3-glucuronyltransferase 1 (glucuronosyltransferase P)
Synonyms: B3GAT1, CD57, GlcAT-P, GLCUATP, Glucuronosyltransferase P, HNK1, LEU7, GLCATP, NK-1, NK1, GlcUAT-P
Target Sequences: NM_018644 NP_061114.2 Q9P2W7
