PDGFC (Platelet-derived growth factor C, FALLOTEIN, SCDGF) is a 345-amino acid growth factor protein that has a pivotal role in the regulation of embryonic development, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, cell migration, survival and chemotaxis. It is necessary for proper skeleton formation, in particular for the craniofacial skeleton and the palate, and also for normal skin morphogenesis. In the brain, PDGFC is important for proper formation of the meninges and for glia limitans basement membrane assembly. In adults, it is also involved in inflammation, remodeling and proliferation during wound healing. Polymorphisms and mutations in PDGFC are associated with nonsyndromic cleft lip. In immunohistochemistry, PDGFC has membranous, cytoplasmic and also nuclear positivity in plasma and a variety of tissues including the fallopian tube, kidney, breast, gastrointestinal tract, retinal pigment epithelia, prostate, testis and uterus. It is also positive in medulloblastoma.
