Description
SLC1A3 (Glutamate Aspartate Transporter 1, GLAST-1, EAAT1) is an amino acid transporter primarily found in the plasma membrane that functions in glutamate and aspartate uptake and transport. It is found in astrocytes and Bergmann glia in the cerebellum, as well as Muller cells in the retina. It is also found in cardiac myocytes. In disease, SLC1A3 is correlated with ataxia and osteoarthritis. Increased levels of SLC1A3 have also been observed in the cerebellar vermis of the brain in Schizophrenia patients, where it may contribute to reduced glutamate neurotransmission. In immunohistochemistry, SLC1A3 has specific membranous positivity in neuropil and populations of glial cells in the brain.
