Description
Cytokeratin AE1 / AE3 is a keratin cocktail that detects KRT1-8, 10, 14-16 and 19. It does not detect CK17 or CK18, and for this reason some pan-keratin cocktails also contain CAM5.2 (which detects CK18). AE1 / AE3 is used by pathologists to confirm or rule out the epithelial nature of tissue, tumors or components of tumors. Furthermore, it is used in immunohistochemistry to identify metastatic carcinoma in bone marrow and lymph nodes.

This AE1/AE3 antibody cocktail recognizes most of the acidic (Type I) keratins as well as basic (Type II). It recognizes keratin polypeptides of 40, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56.5, 58, 59 and 64 to 67 kD. In keratinized epidermis, 50 kD keratin is present in the basal layer, while 56.5 kD keratin is present in suprabasal layers, where as 58 kD keratin is present in the basal and suprabasal layers, while 65 to 67 kD keratin is present in the cells above the basal layers. can be used to stain distinct cell layers in an epithelial tissue and various neoplasms of epithelial origin.
