N-terminal ProANP (NT-proANP ) is a stable peptide produced from the Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP, NPPA) preprohormone after the signal sequence is cleaved, and it constitutes the predominant form of ANP stored in atrial granules of the heart. ANP is a hormone secreted from the cardiac atria that functions to reduce expanded extracellular fluid (ECF) volume. The NT-proANP product of ANP is used as a biomarker in cardiovascular diseases such as atrial fibrillation and also as a predictor of cardiovascular outcome after coronary stent implantation.
