Sulfonation, an important step in the metabolism of many drugs, xenobiotics, hormones, and neurotransmitters, is catalyzed by sulfotransferases. The CST cDNA encodes a 423-amino acid protein with a predicted type II transmembrane topology and 2 potential N-linked glycosylation sites; it is not homologous to either the cytosolic sulfotransferases or the Golgi sulfotransferases. Galactosylceramide sulfotransferase catalyzes the conversion between 3'-phosphoadenylylsulfate + a galactosylceramide <=> adenosine 3',5'-bisphosphate + galactosylceramide sulfate. Activity is enhanced in renal cell carcinoma by the action of epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factor, and hepatocyte growth factor. The role of this enzyme in renal cell carcinoma is currently unknown.
