Recognizes the 170-180kD P-glycoprotein, a plasma membrane associated molecule which is important in mediating resistance to cytotoxic drugs. In normal tissues P-glycoprotein is expressed in liver, kidney, colon, adrenal gland and lung. In malignant conditions increased expression of P-glycoprotein may be associated with multi-drug resistance, and the detection of this can have important consequences for treatment. This clone has also been reported to be suitable for Western blot analysis.
Immunohistology: This product requires protein digestion pre-treatment of paraffin sections e. g. 0.1% pronase, 10 mins.
The membrane-associated protein encoded by this gene is a member of the superfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven distinct subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). This protein is a member of the MDR/TAP subfamily. Members of the MDR/TAP subfamily are involved in multidrug resistance.
