SPEG complex locus

Expression of this gene is thought to serve as a marker for differentiated vascular smooth muscle cells which may have a role in regulating growth and differentiation of this cell type. The encoded protein is highly similar to the corresponding rat and mouse proteins. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene, but the full-length nature of only one variant has been defined. SPEGbeta encodes a 355-kD protein that has been classified as a TRIO/TRAD serine/threonine kinase. At least one kinase domain is active and capable of autophosphorylation. Four isoforms of SPEG have been identified, and each share the middle three of the five exons of APEG-1, and they differ from each other by using different 5'- and 3'-ends and alternative splicing. A developmental regulatory role for both SPEGalpha and SPEGbeta has been determined, and these genes can therefore serve as sensitive markers for striated muscle differentiation and they may be important for adult striated muscle function.
