SLC22a3 (Solute carrier family 22, member 3), also known as EMT (Extraneuronal monoamine transporter) or OCT3 (Organic cation transporter 3), possesses properties of a polyspecific organic cation transporter. It is critical for the elimination of endogenous amines, drugs, and environmental toxins. Also, SLC22a3 may play a role in the disposition of cationic neurotoxins and neurotransmitters in the brain. The activity of this protein can be inhibited by steroid compounds, especially by beta-estradiol. Caution: The synonym EMT also is used as an abbreviation for Interleukin 2 Tyrosine Kinase.
