p19ARF is the mouse homolog of human p14ARF, a protein involved in tumor suppression and cellular senescence. p19ARF functions in apoptosis, autophagy and more broadly in tumor suppression via its regulation of MDM2 and P53, where loss of p19ARF can inhibit p53 and contribute to survival in cancer cells (pmid: 18199527). p19ARF is transcribed from the gene Cdkn2a on chromosome 4 cytoband C3-C6 (chromosome 9 in humans), and Cdkn2a is frequently deleted, mutated or hypermethylated in a broad range of cancers. Evaluating p19ARF status via IHC, elisa or assay can be a useful means of examining cell cycle destabilization and the breakdown of apoptosis in a given cancer.
