MUC5AC
mucin 5AC, oligomeric mucus/gel-forming
MUC5AC has been isolated from airway secretions. It is found in the protective film of mucus coating the mucosal surfaces of the respiratory tract and the normal gastrointestinal tissues. Mucins are also expressed at low levels in human fetal gut. MUC5AC is involved in epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation in adult airway mucosa and can be used as a marker for hypersecretory disorders. MUC5AC has also been observed in various tumors. For instance it is expressed in primary mucinous ovarian tumors but not in colonic carcinoma metastatic to the ovary, which makes it a useful marker to distinguish the two types of cancer.
