GALC / Galactocerebrosidase

galactosylceramidase

Galactocerebrosidase (GALC) is a lysosomal enzyme that hydrolyzes several galactolipids. GALC deficiency is associated with Krabbe disease (globoid cell leukodystrophy). The gene is about 60 kb in length and consists of 17 exons. This gene contains ten GC-box-like sequences within the promoter region but no typical TATA box. This feature is also characteristic of other lysosomal protein encoding genes.

Gene Name: galactosylceramidase
Synonyms: GALC, Galactocerebrosidase, GALCERase, Galactosylceramidase, Galactosylceraminidase
Target Sequences: NM_000153 NP_000144.2 P54803
