ERK3, a MAPK type protein kinase, has been associated with the ERK MAPKs based on similarity of the catalytic domain. Compared to ERK1/2, ERK 3 lacks the activating tyrosine phosphorylation site and contains only a serine which is phosphorylated by MEK. ERK3 is primarily localized to the nucleus where it is believed to phosphorylate substrates in response to cell stress and damage.
