Specificity
Recognizes human haptoglobulin, a plasma protein that has high affinity for hemoglobin and is responsible for its capture and hepatic recycling. This process also acts to prevent kidney damage where hemoglobin would otherwise accumulate prior to excretion in the urine. Haptoglobin/hemoglobin complexes are cleared from the circulation in the liver by Kuppfer cells expressing the CD163 scavanger receptor. Two isoforms of human haptoglobin produced by alternative splicing have been described.(AHP082) binds to the canonical isoform 1 of human haptoglobin, binding to the truncated (missing residues 38-96) isoform 2 has not been evaluated. Mutation of the HP gene can lead to the development of Anhaptoglobinemia, a disease characterized by an absence of serum haptoglobin.
