Specificity and Use
EMA / MUC1 antibody was raised against delipidated extract of human cream.
Recognizes epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), a heavily glycosylated protein of 265-400kD. This antibody stains normal and neoplastic epithelium including adenocarcinomas from a range of sites, squamous and transitional cell carcinomas and mesotheliomas. Strong staining of glandular epithelium is seen, but staining of squamous epithelium may be rather patchy. Positive staining with this antibody demonstrates epithelial origin of tumors.

EMA / MUC1 is a membrane-bound protein that is a member of the mucin family. Mucins are O-glycosylated proteins that play an essential role in forming protective mucous barriers on epithelial surfaces. These proteins also play a role in intracellular signaling. This protein is expressed on the apical surface of epithelial cells that line the mucosal surfaces of many different tissues including lung, breast stomach and pancreas.
