PTEN induced putative kinase 1

PINK1 is a serine/threonine protein kinase. PTEN induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1) was first identified by studying expression profiles of cancer cells following the induction of PTEN. Mutations in PINK1 have been linked to autosomal recessive early onset familial form of Parkinson's disease and the protein localized to Lewy bodies. In other tissues, PINK1 is localized to the mitochondria where it is thought to play role in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and in defending against oxidative stress.
