lymphotoxin alpha (TNF superfamily, member 1)

Lymphotoxin alpha is a cytokine produced by activated T and B lymphocytes. It is active as a secreted homotrimer that binds to TNF R1, TNF RII and HVEM. In addition, it functions as a cell surface associated heterodimeric complex with lymphotoxin beta. The heterodimeric form binds to LTbeta R/TNFRSF3. LT alpha has been shown to be a mediator of inflammation and an important link of communication between lymphocytes and stromal cells. It is also cytotoxic for a wide range of tumor cells. In knockout mice loss of LT alpha leads to a reduction of atherosclerotic lesion size.
